About the Musher: Justin Allen, Churchill, MB
Do you allow your racing dogs to have pups?
Absolutely! When I need some.
How old should a dog be before you start to train them to be on the team?
I like to wait until they are almost finished growing. Around 1 year old.
How old were you when you started putting together a team/kennel of dogs?
30 years old
Do you really say “mush” to your team? If not, what do you say to tell them to go and to stop? How about commands to turn?
No I don’t say “mush” I say HIKE to go! WHOA to stop. “Gee” to turn right and “Haw” to turn left.
These are a universal dog sledding commands. In English anyways.
What made you decide to become a dog musher?
It was an accident actually. I volunteered to help a dog musher. Dave Daley! He showed me how awesome it was and now I love it.
If I was going to become a musher, what is the most important thing I would need to know?
To be careful because you might really like it and you will want to spend all your time with your new best friends.. The dogs!!
What did your parents say when you told them you were going to have a kennel?
They were excited and thought it was really great. Also I have to take them for rides whenever they want.
What has been the scariest situation you’ve ever been in while mushing?
I’m lucky I haven’t had too many really scary experiences while dog mushing. Sometime I worry I might be lost or I get scared for the dogs. Don’t want them to get hurt.
What do you feed your dogs? Have you ever tasted dog food? Would you taste it if you were dared?
I feed my dogs lots of meat like chicken, moose and fish. Also a kibble that’s really high in protein and fat.
Yes I have tasted dog food and I would do it if I was dared but you would too. Because I would double dare you.
Are you good with other animals?
I feel like I’m good will lots of animals. I had a few different pets growing up.
